Do you have an entrepreneurial spirit?

Do you have great business ideas but you are not sure where to start?

How do you know if your great idea will deliver value to your customers?

StartUp 101 introduces you to the world of business modelling. In this hands-on workshop, you will be introduced to the Business Model Canvas, a tool for rapidly developing and testing potential business models. We will begin our day exploring your customers needs and desires, in order to understand how your product or service creates value. With a clear customer value proposition in hand, we turn to understanding the key elements of a successful business model: How will you reach your customers? Where will your revenue come from? What are your expenses? What does your competition look like?

At the end of this one-day workshop, you will:

* Know if your idea is viable
* Understand how to assess your customer’s needs
* Learn key components of business modelling
* Have the tools to assess your competitive environment
* Develop skills to write a compelling business plan

Lunch will be provided, giving you the opportunity to connect with fellow enrepreneurs and expand your network.

This workshop is facilitated by Kathleen Lane and Susan Chapelle, two local entrepreneurs with a passion for building vibrant communities with thriving local economies.

Kathleen Lane: Kathleen is driven by her vision of a future where people, communities and ecosystems are thriving. Since earning her MBA from UBC’s Sauder School of Business in 2015, Kathleen has focused on building capacity in the social impact sector. Initially, she provided strategic planning, project management and operational consulting to small businesses and not-for-profit organizations. Sensing a need to build capacity within the sector, Kathleen shifted her focus to providing high-impact learning opportunities. She currently supports the not-for-profit sector through her role as Manager, Learning and Evaluation at Vantage Point, where she develops, facilitates and evaluates programing on governance, planning, HR and leadership. Outside this role, Kathleen continues to share her expertise with the business community through workshops on topics such as business planning, responsible business practices and creating high-performing workplaces.

Susan Chapelle: Susan is an entrepreneur and has founded businesses for over 30 years. Susan is owner of Squamish Integrated Health, and the founder of Aligned Collective, a community economic development accelerator that is helping build local business capacity. She is serving a second term as City Councillor for the District of Squamish. She holds a Certificate in Community Economic Development from Simon Fraser University and recently completed an Executive MBA. Her numerous publications and expertise on the subjects of cities, health and technology have offered her the opportunity to travel globally as a keynote speaker and educator. As a researcher, Susan has published extensively, including recent work on a National Institute of Medical Science grant published in PLOS One.
